NASA JPL

On 28th April 2014 over a 10 minute period (04:48 UTC to 04:58 UTC) the Mars Curiosity Rover captured a series of images showing what looks like a giant cylinder off in the Martian horizon.

I put the 6 frames from the JPL website together, in sequence, as an animated gif.

The final frame in the animation sequence shows the tip of the object protruding above the horizon suggesting the 'object' may not have been a lens flare because that would appear in front of the horizon.

One possible explanation for the object could be an over exposed sequence of shots of a Martian Moon separated for some technical reason into 6 distinct frames.

Or is it a single long giant cylinder orbiting Mars?

"There is an unidentified track history 1.3nm E of the A320’s position 28 seconds earlier, but no surveillance data to suggest a detectable object passing underneath the A320"

"A320: "Glasgow Approach [A320 C/S]"

EGPF: "[A320 C/S] pass your message"

A320: "Er yeah we just had something pass underneath us quite close [1255:30] and nothing on TCAS have you got anything on in our area"

EGPF: "Er negative err we've got nothing on err radar and we're n- not talking to any traffic either"

A320: "Er not quite sure what it was but it definitely err quite large [1255:40] and it's blue and yellow"

EGPF: "OK that's understood err do you have a an estimate for the height"

A320: "Maybe err [1255:50] yeah we were probably about erm four hundred to five hundred feet above it so it's probably about three and a half thousand feet."

"A further review of individual radar sources did not yield any conclusive radar data that matched the A320 pilot’s description of the encounter. The ATC unit’s own radar replay also showed no surveillance traces in the immediate vicinity of the A320 at the time. Once on the ground the A320 pilot gave a further description of the event to the Glasgow Aerodrome Controller:

A320: “…we seemed to only miss it by a couple of hundred feet it went directly beneath us … wherever we were when we called it in it was within about ten seconds”; “… couldn’t tell what direction it was going but it went right underneath us”

EGPF: “do you suspect it might have been a glider or something like that”

A320: “well maybe a microlight … it just looked too big for a balloon.”

With no other information to indicate the presence or otherwise of activity in the area members of the board were unable to reach a conclusion as to a likely candidate.

"PART B: SUMMARY OF THE BOARD'S DISCUSSIONS Information available included a report from the A320 pilot, transcripts of the relevant RT frequencies, radar photographs/video recordings, reports from the air traffic controllers involved and reports from the appropriate ATC authority.

The Board initially considered likely candidates for the untraced ac.

The A320 crew had not been able to assimilate any information regarding the form of the untraced ac in the fleeting glimpse they had, reporting only a likely colour.

Members were of the opinion that, in the absence of a primary radar return, it was unlikely that the untraced ac was a fixed-wing or rotary-wing ac or man-carrying balloon. It was considered that a meteorological balloon would be radar significant and unlikely to be released in the area of the Airprox.

A glider could not be discounted but it was felt unlikely that one would be operating in that area, both due to the constrained airspace and the lack of thermal activity due to the low temperature. Similarly, The Board considered that a hang-glider or para-motor would be radar significant and that conditions precluded them, as they did para-gliders or parascenders.

Members were unable to reach a conclusion as to a likely candidate for the conflicting ac and it was therefore felt that the Board had insufficient information to determine a Cause or Risk.
PART C: ASSESSMENT OF CAUSE AND RISK
Cause: Sighting report.
Degree of Risk: D."

"Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east.

The lights were seen as far north as Caithness in Scotland as well as in Wales and Norfolk in East Anglia.

Experts said the sightings could be satellite debris, burning up on entry to the atmosphere.

The lights have also been reported in the Midlands, parts of north-east England and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth near Edinburgh, who watched the objects pass through the sky, said it appeared to be something "pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere".

"I've seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful.""

"The fear of ridicule the fear of disbelief is still a big factor with this" said Nick Pope on Fridays BBC Today. (17th August 2012)

Nick Pope, who used to work on the Ministry of Defence UFO desk was asked by BBC Radio 4 about UFO sightings. "Has there ever been one that has led you to believe that it was something from somewhere else?"

Nick Pope responds "No there was no definitive smoking gun that said these things are alien".

He then said "but on the other hand, we never said never, and there was certainly one or two cases over the years that even the diehard sceptics at the MoD scratched their head and said well we genuinely are puzzled by this one."

According to Nick Pope the term UFO is strongly associated with ridicule and notes that although the UFO department was ‘officially axed’ in 2009 it unofficially may still exist.

He said “I think people get round that by using phrases like unusual aircraft and unconventional helicopter no one wants to say they have seen a UFO anyway because it can be the kiss of death career wise, the fear of ridicule the fear of disbelief is still a big factor with this.”

Newly released documents from the Ministry of Defence classified archives show staff believed aliens could visit for “military reconnaissance”, “scientific” research or “tourism”.

In a 1995 briefing now published by the National Archives, a desk officer said the purpose of reported alien craft sightings “needs to be established as a matter of priority”, adding there did not appear to be “hostile intent”.

He warned: 'With the summer of mass events we are all on high alert for terrorism. But we must also cast our eyes further afield and be prepared for even the most seemingly unfathomable.'

Pope's duties at the MoD included investigating reports of UFOs between 1991 and 1994, and says he began his research as a sceptic, before becoming convinced that the sightings raised important defence for national security and air safety issues.

Hughes reported the sighting to his senior officers who sent him to see Duncan Sandys, the then aviation minister, to brief him personally

UFO claims surround military jet mystery on the Costa del Sol.

One British reader, who asked to remain anonymous, told the paper this weekend: “It was terrifying. They were clearly tailing this strange-looking craft.

“I cannot describe what it was, but it was long and thin and had flashing lights. It was definitely not a plane or helicopter.

“It made a very strange sound and moved slowly before suddenly shooting off at top speed.”

Her neighbour Alison Woods, who is married to a former RAF engineer, added: “It was a eerily humming sound, nothing I have ever witnessed before.

“We have lived on various RAF bases in UK and abroad. It was the most bizarre sound, not easy to explain.”

"Here are 2 of the 6 photos that I took one night (on or about 7 Feb, 2010) while at our office in the MLG compound on Camp Leatherneck Afg. I know that ALL of my friends on FB that were with us saw the same thing. They were up there long enough that people were leaving.

They were up there for a long time without moving. They went away for a while and then came back. They didn't move or blink or make any noise. They looked like they were really high up but there was nothing to base that on. Pretty cool event.

Now that I have seen it on TV it is super cool that we were able to witness it.

  • 1. I was in my office in teh MLG Compound on Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan.
  • 2. One of the Marines in the Company came into the office to tell us about the lights.
  • 3. At first we thought maybe flares or weather balloons but they didn't change alt. or fade out or fall.
  • 4. As my attachments show there were 7 equally spaced lights in the sky that did not appear to move or change.
  • 5. Very interested to see the lights, so many people saw them and didn't even stop to look at them. There was a lot going on during the day but nothing to distract us during the sighting.
  • 6. I hate to say it but after maybe 45 minutes we just went back inside to work.

I have 4 more pics they are sharper but since I was moving they make the light appear as if they were moving. The two I attached are pretty clear"
Military Times.com

"Jason McClellan, editor of Open Minds Magazine, a publication about UFOs, said military flares or Chinese lanterns can produce this effect in the night sky. But the length of time the lights stayed put, plus the witness report, make both of these unlikely, he said.

Hastings agreed.

For a more skeptical view, Marine Corps Times turned to military analyst Loren Thompson, chief operating officer at the Lexington Institute, a public policy think tank.

After reading the report, Thompson scoffed at the idea aliens would choose Afghanistan, of all places, to visit.

It can’t be aliens, because they usually go to places that have leaders,” he said."
