| HG Wells |
It's 21st September and Google changes their doodle again coinciding with their recent UFO theme, this time the UFO is actually part of the word as an 'O', with other UFO's sitting atop tripods in the background.
After some speculation regarding Google's intentions with their UFO themed doodles, it seems likely that the intentions were aimed at H.G. Wells, author of 'War of the Worlds' 1898, a hugely popular story of invaders from Mars which was later featured as an episode on the American radio drama anthology series 'Mercury Theatre' and was performed as a Halloween episode on October 30, 1938. It aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network.
The radio drama was directed and narrated by Orson Wells and famously fooled members of the public into mistaking a real alien invasion was under way, unfortunately with real casualties. From the book spawned a musical in 1978 by Jeff Wayne called "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds" which achieved international success including worldwide hit singles "The Eve of the War" and "Forever Autumn", with vocals performed by Justin Hayward in both.
